I think the exerciser versus athlete mindset is helpful when talking about crossfit. While crossfit can certainly be done with a exerciser mindset (ie all metcon all the time), I think that it's helpful in converting exercisers into athletes. Training becomes about performance and progressive strength and skill gains, and showing up and putting the time in. I guess that's really the difference between the globogym model and and serious training gym/program.
It's really hard to explain to most people why I would bother getting up early, driving to Dublin, and paying "a lot" of money to "work out" when there is a gym just down the street that only charges $10 a month. Most people only respect others as athletes when they compete in something (marathon, powerlifting, martial arts, etc).
